Student Projects that show real technique progress

This page is a gallery of completed socks and in-progress details that highlight the practical checkpoints we teach: measured gauge, tidy gusset pick-ups, a well-seated heel turn, and finishing that feels smooth in shoes. Use it as a reference for what “good enough to repeat” looks like—clean fabric, consistent tension, and a predictable fit.

Project Gallery

Each photo is chosen for a reason. A finished pair can look charming from a distance, but sock knitting is about small decisions: the firmness of ribbing, the stability of a heel flap, and the way the toe closes without a ridge. In the course, we ask learners to take short “checkpoint photos” for their own records—cuff measured, gusset stitches picked up, toe shaped—because those images make it easier to compare the second sock to the first.

You will see different fibres and textures here, but the evaluation stays the same: even stockinette, consistent stitch columns, no laddering between needles, and a fabric density that holds up to abrasion. We include practical notes like “count rows on the heel flap before turning” and “block the swatch before calculating negative ease,” because those habits are what lead to repeatable results.

Gauge-first habits

Many projects look “better” simply because the fabric is dense enough. We teach swatching in the round, blocking, and then calculating negative ease with the actual stitches-per-10 cm.

Finishing that disappears

We focus on tidy end weaving and a comfortable toe close. When Kitchener stitch is set up correctly, the graft reads as a continuous row of stitches instead of a seam.
